One and done evening
I've had a light schedule with the umpire gig of late; partly because we're in that transition period between winter season and spring season. Possibly for other reasons too, but that would just be speculation. Anyway, I ended up working just one game yesterday. It was supposed to be two, but one of the teams just didn't show up for the 7:00 playoff. Easy advance for the team that did, I suppose. Congrats to the Squids.
There wasn't much notable about the one game, really, there wasn't even enough stuff happening atmospherically to dig out the Cap Hill Softball Bingo card. Though it was unusual in one respect: neither team hit double digits in the scoring. The winners staged a late comeback with a walkoff 4-run 7th to take it by a final score of 9-8. I like those, it's kind of rare to do a game where there aren't a lot of overthrows or misplays, or where one team doesn't just beat the tar out of the other. It wasn't quite the defensive showcase that I saw last week, but still nice.
Then we just stood around for a while to give the late-game forfeiting team their required grace period before calling it a night.
Oh well, these things happen—forfeits, scheduling weirdness, all part of the deal.
This week I have three games on Thursday night and that's it. Possibly my own error, I noticed earlier today that I had marked myself unavailable next Sunday afternoon which was a mistake; there are only two games scheduled on Sunday anyway, so I may not have gotten those either way. I'm curious to see what the scheduling looks like going forward, as the winter season was lighter than expected for me and I don't know if it was just because the economy sucks and the umps that previously didn't want to work the winter were asking for hours; or if maybe because the economy sucks, the fact that I'm at the top of the pay scale works against me. More games at more parks during spring and summer, so more of us will be needed, so I hope to be back on a three-times-a-week/6-9 games per week routine. We'll see.
