A week in SoCal...with more to come
I've been down here at Dad & Marty's place for a week now, and it appears I'll be here at least a couple more. I have mixed feeling about that, to be sure—I miss my kitties, I worry about them; plus, I'll be glad to get away from these damned mosquitos. But Dad's deterioration is becoming too much for Marty to handle solo, so I'll stick around for a while, maybe until there's a support system in place. We'll see.
Also, not for nothing, when I do eventually head home I'll be glad to be out of the scorching desert. I mean, I grew up in a similar environment, so it's not foreign or anything, but I am so very not used to this anymore. It is 106° outside right now. My car is an oven. It's oppressively uncomfortable outdoors, and I've been getting basically zero exercise. I'll take the rain instead, thank you.
Anyway.
So far I've had to pick Dad up off the floor twice after falls. I've spent more time cleaning up bloody cuts than I'd anticipated having to do. He's got a vertigo issue and we got a referral for seeing someone for a kind of inner-ear rebalancing therapy, but I'm a little dubious. As I understand it, that sort of physical therapy is pretty intense, I'm not sure Dad can handle it, but I know the vertigo is already awful so it's be worth it if we can get him in soon.
He's also bouncing all over the place in his mind. He was telling me about things we'll need to do "once we get back to the mainland," indicating that part of him jumped back to when he lived in Hawaii. He tried to get up to go see about fixing a tire on his car, a car he hasn't owned for decades. A bunch of stuff like that.
Marty and I are trying to get the house a little more livable, putting a safety rail on the bed and making the furniture more accommodating and so on. It's slow going, but by necessity.
Meanwhile, the world keeps spinning along, and I'm feeling a little weird about not keeping up with the news as much as I usually do; in some ways that's probably not a bad thing. There's enough here for me to fret about without adding the crackpot orange menace to the mix.
